Benjamin Nygren, born 8 July 2001 (age 24), is a Swedish attacking midfielder who joined Celtic from FC Nordsjaelland in July 2025 for around £1.5m. Given the usual noise around attacking midfielders, that was a fairly modest fee for a player who arrived with senior football behind him and room still to grow.

He took the number 8 shirt and became a regular part of the Celtic first team in 2025–26. His league return has been the most productive of his career so far: 16 goals in 38 appearances, a useful contribution from a central attacking role rather than a decorative one.

Across all competitions for Celtic, Nygren has made 57 appearances and scored 21 goals. That includes three League Cup appearances, four in the Scottish Cup with one goal, two in Champions League qualifying, and 10 in the Europa League with four goals. He has also represented Sweden this season, making five World Cup qualifying appearances and scoring once.

His current market value is around £8.5m, according to Transfermarkt. Nygren’s career is still taking shape, but his first season at Celtic has made him a regular first-team presence rather than just another attacking option.

Benjamin Nygren has been used as a first-choice attacking midfielder for Celtic this season, making 38 Premiership appearances, 29 of them starts, and scoring 16 goals. That is a high return for a central attacking midfielder rather than a pure forward, and his wider club output – 21 goals in 57 appearances across domestic and European competition – points to a player carrying a significant share of the scoring load.

Nygren’s rating profile is strong and relatively stable, with a season average of 7.37, a high of 9.37 and a low of 6.43. The spread suggests he has had standout matches without many genuinely poor ones, which fits the numbers of a regular starter with end product rather than a peripheral creator.

Nygren’s career path shows a player who needed a reset after an early move from IFK Gothenburg to Genk, with a Heerenveen loan followed by a more productive spell at FC Nordsjaelland. The seasonal goal trend is notable: one, three, six, 15 and now 16 in successive recent campaigns. Even with limited appearance detail in the career record, the scoring curve suggests clear progression rather than stagnation.

The transfer history points to a player whose value dipped after Genk paid €3.4m to sign him from IFK Gothenburg in 2019, before Nordsjaelland picked him up for €540k in 2022. Celtic’s €1.5m move in 2025 looks like a step back up in level at a controlled fee, especially against a current market value listed at €10.00m.
