Fredrik Aursnes, born on 10 December 1995 (age 30), is a Norwegian central defensive midfielder with Benfica, where he wears the number 8 shirt. He is not a showy footballer, which is often the point. His value tends to sit in positioning, use of the ball and the sort of midfield housekeeping that only becomes obvious when it is missing.
His most productive league season came with Molde in 2018, when he scored eight goals in 29 appearances. That gave a fuller picture of his game than the holding-midfielder label alone suggests: disciplined enough to sit, but capable of contributing higher up the pitch when the team allowed it.
At Benfica, Aursnes has continued as an important first-team player rather than a headline act. In 2026-27, he has made five appearances in all competitions, scoring once, including three outings in Liga Portugal and involvement in European competition. He has also been active with Norway, featuring in World Cup and Nations League matches.
Aursnes’s career has been built steadily: from making his mark in Norway with Molde to becoming a regular part of Benfica’s midfield. It is a solid, unfussy profile, and one that has held its value at club and international level.
