Shankland's professional career started with the Championship's Queens Park back in July 2012. His first season saw him score ten goals in 33 league matches. From there, he moved to Aberdeen in the Premiership in July 2013, a team he steadfastly contributed to over two seasons, despite a loan stint at Dunfermline Athletic, and another at St Mirren.
Loan spells aside, Shankland was picked up by Ayr United in September 2017. His season with Ayr proved him a valuable asset on the pitch, scoring a solid 16 goals in mere 18 appearances. His prowess was apparent, and did not go unnoticed by Dundee United, to whom he transferred in July 2019. Here, he continued to defend his promise, featuring heavily in the field across two seasons.
Shankland took an overseas hiatus from Scottish football come August 2021, making a move to Beerschot in the Pro League in Belgium. His fee was reported to be around £1.1m at the time. Although he performed well, his heart belonged to Scottish soil, and he returned the following year, signing with Hearts in July 2022.
Upon his return, Shankland took his game to an exceptional level. Over consecutive seasons, he racked up an impressive total of 48 goals across 74 appearances, reigning a central figure in Hearts' offense. Furthermore, the current season sees another prodigious performance, with 6 goals scored so far. As well as the domestic game, Shankland boasts an impressive track record in several international and continental competitions, including the League Cup, Scottish Cup, Euro Championships and Europa League qualifiers.
