Leandro Barreiro, born on 3 January 2000 (age 26), is a Luxembourg international midfielder with Benfica. He is primarily a centre midfielder, and his career has been shaped above all by Mainz 05 rather than by a trail through half a dozen clubs.
Barreiro came through at Mainz and became a proper first-team player there, making 141 league appearances and scoring 11 league goals across six seasons. His most productive Bundesliga campaign came in 2022-23, when he scored four times in 31 league appearances. That was not headline-grabbing stuff, but it was steady, useful work in a demanding league.
His move to Benfica took him into a different sort of club, with different expectations and less patience for bedding-in stories. In 2026-27 he remains involved, with 12 appearances and three goals across all competitions, including seven Liga Portugal appearances and two league goals. He has also featured in Europe, with four Europa League qualifying appearances and one goal, plus one Europa League appearance.
Barreiro has stayed active with Luxembourg as well, adding six World Cup qualifying appearances and two Nations League appearances, scoring once in the latter. His career is still anchored by what he built at Mainz, but he remains a current first-team option at Benfica rather than a player living off an earlier spell.
