Liam Scales, born on 8 August 1998, is an established Irish defender playing as a central piece of Celtic's backline. Known for his tenacity and defensive prowess, the solid 1.88m (6ft 2in) footballer weighs around 85kg (13st 5lb), casting an imposing figure on the pitch. Turning out for Celtic in his number 5 jersey, Scales has had the honour of representing his home country, the Republic of Ireland, on numerous international occasions.
Valued at approximately £3m according to Transfermarkt, Scales' contract with Celtic will run until 31 May 2028, securing his place within the team for the foreseeable future.
Scales' journey to Celtic began in January 2017 when he first joined UCD in the First Division in the Republic of Ireland. Through his time with UCD in his debut 2019 season, he demonstrated his potential, appearing 30 times in first team matches and scoring a singular goal. The following year, he transferred from UCD to Shamrock Rovers and continued to impress with a total of 39 appearances and 2 goals across two seasons.
In August 2021, Scales then transferred to Celtic, where he found his home in Scottish football. Particularly from the 2023 - 2024 season until now, Scales has made a significant impact at Celtic, contributing to the team with 64 appearances and 4 goals. However, this Celtic journey was briefly interrupted by a loan spell at Aberdeen during the 2022 - 2023 season where he made a considerable impression; 31 first team appearances and one goal.
Upon returning to Celtic from his loan at Aberdeen, Scales continued his upward trajectory. With routine participation in various tournaments, he notably contributed to Celtic's Champions League 2023 - 2024 campaign with six starts. He also made appearances in the League Cup 2024 - 2025 and Scottish Cup 2024 - 2025. On an international level, Scales represented the Republic of Ireland in the Euro Qualifiers 2022 - 2024 and Nations League 2024 - 2025, even scoring in the latter.
Scales' steady rise and contributions have firmly established him as a valuable asset in Celtic's defence, and a player to follow within both the Scottish Premiership and the international football realm.
