Liam Scales (age 27), born on 8 August 1998, is a Republic of Ireland central defender who joined Celtic from Shamrock Rovers in August 2021. He arrived after a productive spell in Dublin, with his 2021 league season bringing 23 appearances and two goals.
His Celtic career was not an instant straight line into the side. A loan spell away from the club helped put firmer edges on his game, and he returned better placed to handle the weekly demands of playing at centre-half for Celtic. That development has mattered. Scales is now part of the current first-team picture rather than just a squad name.
Wearing squad number 5, he has remained a regular presence in 2025-2026. Across the season he has made 55 appearances for Celtic in all competitions, scoring twice, including 37 league appearances, four in the League Cup, three in the Scottish Cup, two in Champions League qualifying and nine in the Europa League. He has also played three World Cup qualifiers for the Republic of Ireland.
His market value is around £4.5m, according to Transfermarkt. Scales’ career has moved from Shamrock Rovers to a testing Celtic apprenticeship, and then into a sustained role in the side. He remains an important first-team player in 2025-2026.
