Matteo Gabbia, born on 21 October 1999 (age 26), is an Italian central defender whose senior career has been shaped overwhelmingly at AC Milan. He wears squad number 46 and is valued at around £14.5m by Transfermarkt.
Loan football played its part in his development, giving him the sort of senior grounding young centre-halves tend to need before they are trusted at a club of Milan’s size. The wider arc, though, has kept pulling back to San Siro rather than away from it.
Across eight seasons with AC Milan, Gabbia has made 113 league appearances and scored four league goals. His best scoring season came in 2023-24, with two goals in 18 league matches – modest enough, but centre-backs are not usually employed for their finishing unless something has gone badly wrong elsewhere.
In 2026-27, he has made two Serie A appearances for Milan. His career to this point is a straightforward one: an Italian defender developed around loan experience, then anchored mainly by a long spell at AC Milan.
