Stephen Welsh, born in Coatbridge on 19 January 2000 (age 26), is a tall Scottish central defender on Celtic’s books and currently on loan at Motherwell. At 6ft 3in (1.91m), he has the frame for the job, though his Celtic career has been more about patience and availability than any rush towards certainty.
Welsh joined Celtic from Greenock Morton in January 2020 and was soon around the first-team squad. His busiest league season at Celtic came in 2020-2021, when he made 16 league appearances and scored once. That remains the season which best showed his route into the side: useful, trusted when required, but never quite secure enough to remove the usual questions around Celtic’s defensive depth.
In January 2025 he moved to Motherwell on loan, a practical step for a defender needing regular football rather than another spell waiting for gaps to open at Celtic. In 2025-2026 he has made one league appearance for Celtic and 27 league appearances for Motherwell, scoring once, which keeps him active and relevant rather than merely registered.
Welsh’s market value is around £1.5m, according to Transfermarkt. His career so far is that of an established Scottish professional with a Celtic connection still very much alive, but with his current football being played week to week at Motherwell.
