Kairat are one of Kazakhstan’s established clubs, founded in 1954 and based at Almaty Central Stadium. For Celtic supporters, they sit in that awkward category of opponent: not a glamour name, but not one to be treated as background noise either.
Their squad is sizeable, with 35 players and an average age of 25, and is valued at around £10m by Transfermarkt. That points to a club operating on a different financial scale from Celtic, though European football has rarely been settled by balance sheets alone.
Kairat are second in the Kazakh Premier League and have also been involved in Champions League qualifying play-off football and the Champions League league phase. Their recent league form has been steady rather than spectacular: a 2-1 defeat to Ordabasy followed draws with Kaisar and Ulytau, alongside wins over Zhenis, Kaisar and Irtysh.
Dastan Satpaev has been their clearest scoring outlet this season with four goals, while Ofri Arad, Olzhas Baybek, Edmilson de Paula Santos Filho and Valery Gromyko have also contributed. Kairat’s current standing is that of a strong domestic side with recent European exposure and enough structure to merit proper attention.
