Ferencvaros are one of Hungary’s established names, founded in 1899 and based at the Groupama Aréna. For Celtic supporters, they sit in that familiar European category: a domestic heavyweight from a smaller market, experienced enough to punish carelessness and organised enough not to be treated as a formality.
Their 2026-27 season is in progress with Ferencvaros fifth in Nemzeti Bajnokság I. Their campaign has also included the Europa League qualifying play-offs and the Europa League league phase, which gives a clearer measure of their level than league position alone. According to Transfermarkt, the squad is valued at around £29.5m, with 38 players and an average age of 27.
Recent league form has been broadly positive: a 2-2 draw with Ujpest followed three straight away wins, including 3-0 at ETO Gyori and 2-1 at Puskas Akademia. Their away numbers are more persuasive than their home returns, averaging two goals scored and 1.3 conceded on the road, compared with one scored and one conceded at home.
Kristoffer Zachariassen leads their scoring with six goals, supported by Lenny Joseph and Bamidele Yusuf on four each. Ferencvaros have struck first inside 20 minutes in seven of 18 league matches, so slow starts against them are best avoided.
Ferencvaros are a seasoned Hungarian side with current European exposure, a sizeable squad, and enough away threat to matter. They are not a glamour opponent, but they are a relevant one.
